Flexibility and adaptability

The IoT Building Kit enables the retrofitting of sensors to optimise operational processes in buildings operated by SPIE. While an open-source approach was initially pursued to reduce costs, the focus is now on scalability. It therefore became necessary to switch to SPIE's own IoT platform.

In almost every building, the requirements of users and operators change over time. External factors such as crises can have a significant impact on building operations. By retrofitting sensors, adjustments can be made to mitigate these effects.

Battery-powered, radio-based systems are a practical choice due to their relatively low installation costs. A prime example is LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network), which benefits from a broad ecosystem of manufacturers supporting a wide range of measurement applications. Notably, its comparatively long indoor communication range has been a key factor in the widespread adoption of this radio standard.

But where should the data be collected and managed? Dan Fischer’s team has developed SPIE’s proprietary IoT platform — a robust and reliable cloud solution designed specifically for sensor data. This platform combines extensive expertise with the necessary infrastructure to support the implementation and operation of customized IoT solutions.

Developing an effective IoT solution demands thorough planning: from selecting the appropriate sensors and wireless standards, to ensuring adequate coverage through gateways, and finally to storing and analyzing the collected data. This data is then visualized on intuitive dashboards, used for real-time alerts, and forms the foundation for targeted operational recommendations.

The close collaboration between the IoT specialists and the digital transformation team brings significant benefits. Moving forward, these experts will be involved early in projects and will oversee the implementation and management of tailor-made IoT solutions.

Integration with the Data Integration Platform is scheduled for the near future.
