HoloBuilder in Construction Documentation
A 360-degree construction documentation serves as a digital twin of the project and provides seamless tracking of the construction history—from shell construction to final handover.
The former railway depot in Heidelberg consists of existing Deutsche Bahn buildings and the remnants of the adjoining workshop hall with its rail pits. Over the coming years, a new area will be developed here using a low-tech approach (simple, resource-efficient construction) while adhering to high DGNB standards (German Sustainable Building Council). The plan includes spaces for collaboration, culture, and community in line with heritage preservation, as well as a co-working and co-creation space, workshops, a daycare center, gastronomy, and cultural venues.
SPIE has already tested the HoloBuilder system in the early construction phase. HoloBuilder captures high-resolution images of the construction site using 360-degree cameras. Additionally, 3D scanners can be employed when needed, enabling a virtual walkthrough of the project.
For the 360-degree recordings, fixed positions are defined on the floor plan to ensure transparent documentation of the construction process and progress. An additional advantage of the system is the precise localization of pipes and cables located within drywall partitions, unfinished floors, or suspended ceilings. This way, installations remain visible even after ceilings or floors are closed.
The recordings are completed within a very short time and can be reviewed later in the office to provide operational colleagues with detailed insights when needed.
