Exoskeletons for Overhead Tasks
A project team in Munich uses exoskeletons every day for overhead tasks. This technology has proven itself in daily operations by not only improving health protection but also enhancing workplace safety and efficiency.
Overhead work is demanding and very familiar to our electrical technicians, who often handle ceiling installations such as mounting cable tray systems. These tasks are frequently made even more challenging by the need to carry or lift heavy tools and materials.
For one project team in Munich, overhead and above-shoulder work is now much easier—thanks to the use of the Hilti EXO-S exoskeleton.
The exoskeleton is worn like a lightweight backpack and can be put on or taken off in just 30 seconds. This passive system requires no external power supply and provides targeted support for the shoulders and upper arms. An optional neck support offers additional relief for the neck and cervical spine, while integrated reflectors improve visibility in darker areas such as technical rooms or underground garages.
Currently, two exoskeletons are permanently in use on every construction site. In addition, three more units are available for trainees when needed.
Using exoskeletons not only improves workplace safety and health protection for employees, it also brings clear practical benefits: reduced fatigue during overhead work allows for greater productivity throughout the day. Work quality improves as well, since tasks can be carried out with more precision and less strain. For example, when drilling, employees benefit from noticeably reduced muscle load.
And finally, working with an exoskeleton simply feels good. Maja from the project team puts it this way:
“The exoskeleton is something special. I’m proud of what I carry on my back.”
Enhanced health protection
Increased workplace safety
Improved efficiency
Higher work quality
