Efficient Construction with AR and BIM

The data center project in Frankfurt utilizes Augmented Reality (AR) to align Building Information Modeling (BIM) in real time with the actual construction status on site. This approach specifically enhances construction quality and workflow efficiency.

The technical demands on planning and constructing data centers are increasingly complex. To meet these challenges, SPIE has relied on Building Information Modeling (BIM) for years, continuously refining its application with each new project.

Using Autodesk Revit software, detailed 3D models are created that capture all relevant aspects of a building—from structural design to technical equipment. BIM enables the integration of all building data into a coordinated model and efficiently manages the entire construction process from planning through execution. Another key benefit of BIM is the ability for all planners and specialists to collaborate simultaneously on a shared cloud model, allowing early detection and resolution of clashes and planning errors. This significantly improves planning accuracy.

A supporting feature introduced in our new data center project MWH01.1 in Frankfurt is the use of Augmented Reality (AR).

AR allows BIM models to be visualized directly on site via tablet PCs, enabling precise progress verification. With AR, various areas of the emerging building can be compared against architectural and engineering plans through overlay via the integrated camera. Wall locations, openings, structural elements, as well as mechanical and electrical installations can thus be checked.

This method helps the construction management ensure that execution complies with the specifications defined in the BIM model. Additionally, AR technology facilitates early detection of discrepancies between planning and reality, enabling timely interventions that accelerate the overall construction timeline.
